On July 4th, 1774, a terrible explosion occurred on board the HMS Kent, 74, Captain Charles Feilding (1), whilst lying at Plymouth. A quantity of powder had been carelessly left on the poop whilst the guns were being scaled. This took fire from some wads, and forty-five men were killed or injured.
